Prominent chess players today

Two of the best players from Spain are still active in tournaments today, continuing to bring home championships and medals to their country and families.

Francisco Vallejo Pons

According to the International Chess Federation (FIDE), Francisco Vallejo Pons is ranked as the 28th best player in the world and top player of Spain. He was granted the title of Grandmaster at the age of 16 and additionally holds title of International Master.

Sabrina Vega Gutiérrez

“…is a Spanish chess player who holds the Fide titles of International Master (IM) and Woman Grandmaster (WGM)”, earning the title of Woman International Master in 2003, Woman Grandmaster in 2007, and the non-gender segregated title of International Master in 2013. Spain also plays host to chess tournaments of a very peculiar type. One Savins Puertas Martin, while not in the grandmaster ranking, holds a different kind of title in his ventures in chess. During the summer of 2020, he secured victory as Underwater Chess Champion. This tourney is listed as being included in the national sports calendar in Spain for future competitions.
